Our 2005 NCEA Distinguished Graduate
Class of 1971
Laurence 'Bucky' Fitzgerald
The Catholic Schools Week 'kick-off' Mass set the tone for the week of activities and celebrations for the people that make Catholic education so special. This year's theme was 'Faith in Every Student' and the school used the values that Jesus gave us in the Beatitudes as the focus for the week. At the end of the Sunday's liturgy, the school honored this year's recipient of the St. Hugh's School Distinguished Graduate Award, Laurence (Bucky) Fitzgerald, III, class of 1971. The purpose of the award is to highlight the achievements and contributions of alumni that reflect the characteristics of the education received in a Catholic elementary school.
Bucky Fitzgerald and his wife, Beverly, have been very visible on the school grounds for the last ten years. While their son, Bucky, attended St. Hugh's School from kindergarten through eighth grade, Bucky Senior served our school in many roles. He coached numerous CYO baseball and basketball teams throughout the years, as well as holding CYO organization positions, tutored students in math, and was the Chairman of the Reunion Committee for St. Hugh's School's 50th Anniversary Reunion held in 2000. This event helped to build up the alumni database and raised over $4000 for the school.
His work outside of the school also exemplifies the Gospel values. Bucky is the co-founder and former chairman of the board of the Greenbelt Step Club. This is a meeting house for various 12-Step fellowships where people go to get help for problems caused by diseases of alcoholism and addiction.
Catholic education has been such an integral part of the achievements in Bucky's life that he feels an obligation to give back whenever and however he can.
