The fifth grade curriculum is engaging and challenging but, by the end of the year, fifth graders will be well prepared to accept the responsibilities and rigors of middle school. The fifth grade academic goals for the first quarter are:

  • Sequences of numbers, place value through hundred-thousand
  • Addition and subtraction algorithm
  • Fact Families
  • Word problems for addition and subtraction
  • Number lines
  • Naming line segments
  • Multiplication of 1 and 2 numbers times one number
  • Division with and without remainders
  • Naming Fractions

Language Arts:

  • Reading a novel and writing responses to the literature
  • Identifying main character, setting, plot, and theme
  • Reading informational text to draw out information
  • Note taking, writing note cards for reports
  • Writing a report
  • Sentence structure and using colorful verbs


  • Culture, climate, location, and history of Native Americans
  • Exploration of the “New World”
  • Early English Colonies


  • Cells and multicellular organisms
  • Structure of cells
  • Populations and ecosystems
  • Food chains and food webs
